Energy FC to debut ‘Electric City’ kits in USL Opener
OKC Energy FC begin their 2021 USL Championship campaign Saturday evening against cross-state rival FC Tulsa. Hoping to get a three-point start to the season, they will be the visual focal point of the night regardless of the results.
The “Electric City” kits combine a traditional green (used since the club’s debut in 2013) alongside a vibrant pink that will be sure to create critics and fans alike upon their debut. “It's a good feeling," Energy midfielder Arun Basuljevic weighed in on wearing the new kit to start the season. “They say all press is good press, but it's a little bright for my liking. It's definitely one that catches some eyes, so, we will get used to it.“
A season opening win in the new kit will catch some eyes locally as well as across the USL landscape, and could be exactly what is needed for the club to gain some invaluable early season momentum both in the standings and with the local fans.
Second year manager John Pascarella said the new kits give the team an extra reason to show well in front of the home fans.
“I kind of like the kit, actually. It's got a good look to it," he said. "(The kit) is going to get a lot of attention, so you better play well on the nights that you're wearing them...and that's how I'm gonna frame it to the guys.”
Contrary to his personal fashion taste, Basuljevic hopes that the team can show well in their opener and jokes about buying into some fun superstition.
“I mean listen, hopefully we get started with a win and then we can never have to take it off so we'll see," he said.
These polarizing kits can be seen in the Energy FC season opener on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Taft Stadium in Oklahoma City, as well as streamable on ESPN+.
