The Oklahoma City Energy have inked their 13th player for the 2021 season.
Defender Conor Donovan joins the Energy from North Carolina FC.Last season Donovan led
North Carolina FC in a number of defensive categories, including clearances (48), blocks (13), aerial duels (66) and aerial duals won.
"Conor Donovan is a very, very good player," Energy head coach John Pascarella said in a press release by the club. "He's a good center back with a good mix of qualities we were looking for. He's very good in buildup play, he's got food feet and range of pass. Defensively, he's strong and physical and is good in the air and in the tackle."
Oklahoma City needed to shore up their defense after letting in 29 goals in 16 matches last year and finishing with a negative 17 goal differential.
Donovan is an experienced addition to the Energy back line. The 6-foot-3, 25-year-old has MLS experience with Orlando City SC and Houston Dynamo FC, as well as previous USL stints with Rio Grande Valley FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Orlando City B.
"I think he's going to be able to help direct the defense," Pascarella said. "Before I took the job here, I spoke to my former boss, Adrian Heath in Minnesota, who was the one who first had him, and a lot of people I've worked with in the past have had good things to say about him."
